Tourists have been cancelling hundreds of hotel bookings in the Maldives every day since the imposition of a state of emergency last week, tour operators say, despite government assurances things are normal in the resort islands, far from the capital.

China, India, the United States and Britain issued travel warnings after President Abdulla Yameen imposed the emergency and arrested judges who had ordered him to free jailed opposition leaders. Pray for the peace of the Maldives and pray the Prince of Peace will show himself to the Maldivian people.

The Maldives are in a fight to preserve their coral reef structures from bleaching. Pray for their islands but more importantly, pray for a preservation of the souls of the people. Pray for the light of Christ to wash their sins white as snow.

Merry Christmas from the Maldives!…

Merry Christmas from the Maldives!

We pray for your families as we also pray for those who have not yet heard the Good News that is celebrated today. There are a lot of cultures around the world that celebrate Christmas, but do not know the true meaning of Christmas. We pray for opportunities to share the Gospel during this time of the year.

Pray that Christmas is a time of year for the Maldivian people to be open and receptive to hear about the Gospel.

Matthew 1:22-23 (NIV)
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” which means “God with us”.

The climate in the Maldives is tropical. There are basically two seasons: the dry northeast monsoon season and the wet southwest monsoon season. Don’t let the word “monsoon” confuse you: the Maldives is a year-round tropical paradise.

The spiritual climate, on the other hand, is anything but heavenly. World Watch ranks the Maldives as the sixth most difficult nation in which to be a Christian. Churches and Christian literature are forbidden, and foreigners found proselytizing can be deported. Believers must practice their faith with utmost secrecy or risk severe consequences.

“Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on…” (I Kings 18:45)

Join us in praying that spiritual rain clouds will form over the Maldives. Though we may only see “a cloud the size of a man’s hand,” we know that God is working in the heavenly realms to draw Maldivians to Himself!

Pray that the Holy Spirit will fall upon Maldivians in unrelenting, powerful ways.
Pray that as the rain of the Spirit falls on them, Islanders will testify boldly of God’s grace in their lives.
Pray that many Maldivians will answer the divine call to a life dedicated to spreading the good news of the gospel.

The Hidden Church…

The Hidden Church

Maldivian believers must endure great isolation. Their numbers are few and they cannot meet openly. There is great fear of betrayal among believers. Without a Bible in their own language to guide them, without a church in which to fellowship, without discipleship materials to show them how to live godly lives, it can be difficult for them to hold on to their faith. Believers need an understanding of God’s love as personal, unconditional, unmerited, and available to all. They need greater trust, leading to greater dependence on God, as well as transparency and openness— including confession of sin. They need the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit to attain balance in every area of their lives.

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! “ (Psalm 133:1)

Let’s unite today in praying that Maldivian believers will grow in their trust of the Lord and of each other as they learn to see themselves as part of Christ’s body.
Pray for conviction of sin leading to sanctification.
Pray that through the Holy Spirit’s guidance, believers will model Christ, displaying humility and holiness even in the midst of persecution.
Pray that discipleship materials will soon become available in their own language.

The Bible—It’s the greatest resource for believers everywhere. Yet Maldivians do not have access to the Bible in their own language, known as Dhivehi. The Maldivian government forbids any “anti-Islamic” materials from entering the country, including Christian literature in the local language. The history of Bible translation into Dhivehi goes back 200 years; yet because of numerous obstacles and challenges, there is still no completed Bible in the language of the Maldives.

Today, as you read these words, brave men and women are risking their lives to make the Bible available in a language and style that every Maldivian will understand. The Gospel of John, recently released in Dhivehi, is one of only a few books of the Bible available in the native language. Finding a native speaker willing to help with Bible translation is a major challenge.

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth… so is my word that goes out from my mouth. (Isaiah 55:10-11)

Pray for the brave men and women involved in the ongoing work of translation, for God’s protection over their lives and work.

Pray for more Islanders willing to give feedback concerning the draft translations of Scripture in Dhivehi.

Pray that the living and active Word of God would penetrate like a two-edged sword, revealing Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life.

The free trade agreement (FTA) that the Maldives signed last week with China has attracted a lot of attention, with concerns being expressed by Indian media about China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives’ Tourism Goods and Services Tax was raised from 8 percent to 12 percent in 2014, raising concerns that the country might become an overpriced destination. Nevertheless, China remains the largest source of tourists for the Maldives, with nearly 240,000 Chinese visitors reportedly arriving in the island country in the first nine months of this year.

Pray that these Chinese tourists would bring Jesus to the islands. Pray for laborers to come from China to bring the love and power of Jesus to these islands. May this trade agreement bring more than tourists, may the gospel come as well.
